I love the idea of world-building, but that's for the sci-fi and the fantasy folks, not for a romance author who likes to add just a bit of mystery/suspense. Alex is on a virtual book tour, and from the number of comments he is getting it's looks like a sure success.
As a artist, as well as a writer, I love to create paintings that might be considered the settings for a fantasy universe. Now, if I can just figure out how to tie them in with a new book.
That idea intrigues me.

I think building a fantastical world can go either way. It might be over done or just right. I suppose it could be raw too. I have lived in a fantasy all my life. It's easy for me to imagine this since I searched my mother's gardens for faerie when I was a child. Never found one. When I read J. R. R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings and Hobbit, I wanted to know where the elves went. I came up with a solution.

Thanks for the mention, Monti! Appreciate you following my tour - it's a blast so far.
ReplyDeleteI think there's a lot you can do with world-building even with a real life setting. The possibilites are as varied as there are people and we all see the world a little different.
Holly Lisle has great resources for world building - covering everything from creating a language to populating it with characters. I think this is the best part of writing - creating a world you can control. The Power!
ReplyDeleteI start off with an interesting scene first and build the rest of the world around it.

Thanks for the comments! I've never tried world-building but think it might be fun to create and control a world of our own!!!
