Thanksgiving Season--For What Are We Thankful?

For many years, Thanksgiving season has seemed like a passed over time to me. In my home town, I've seen Christmas trees go up before Halloween. A lot of us overlook the reason we celebrate Thanksgiving.

Our town is in the midst of the settlement area of the first English colonies. We have two Indian reservations in our county. Not far away, at Berkeley Plantation there is a celebration of the first official Thanksgiving in 1619. A few years ago, I covered that celebration in a newspaper for which I wrote feature stories. I really thought about the meaning of Thanksgiving then.

Do you think about the things for which you are thankful? Or do you fly through Thanksgiving to get ready for Black Friday? Is Thanksgiving an important holiday on your yearly agenda?

Monti,

Great blog post! I agree that the holiday season has gotten too commercialized. I personally love Thanksgiving and am grateful for the opportunity to express my thanks. :)

Seems like every year Christmas decorations and sales get earlier and earlier crowding out Thanksgiving. I do enjoy Thanksgiving. Hope you have a Happy Thanksgiving.

I'm always thankful. Fortunately, this is just the way I am. I'm thankful for the Good Lord saving me, for my family and friends, good health, my needs met, and such.

Oh, and I'm thankful in advance for the succes of my books!

I love Thanksgiving and the family get togethers. At this time it is usually my immediate family, husband, children and their children. My ancestors were at the first Thanksgiving, I don't know if that is one of the reasons I like it so much. One thing is for sure, just the name, Thanksgiving makes me consider all the things I'm grateful for.

I totally ignore Black Friday regular shopping and confine my outing to the Holiday Market held at our local Senior Center.

But for Thanksgiving, yes, I count my blessing. I have a lot to be thankful for.

Thank you Mason, Stephen, Nancy, and Patricia for your thoughtful comments. How interesting, Nancy, that you had ancestors at the first Thanksgiving!

Gratitude is so important, even for the little things. I start each day thanking God. Thanksgiving is a good day to remember to tell our family how much they mean to us!

On Halloween I went to the grocery store to get some extra candy. They had a whole crew taking down Halloween and putting up Christmas. Hey, what happened to Thanksgiving?! For me, Thanksgiving means family, for which I am truly grateful.

Yes, family for me as well, Helen. Thanks for commenting!
