According to many researchers, including a past president of the American Heart Association, broken heart syndrome is real, can be triggered by sudden unexpected emotional stress, and can be fatal. Stress that provokes heart arrhythmia can lead to death.
While I don't believe the actual cause of death has been determined in the case of Debbie Reynolds, her son, Todd Fisher, reported that Reynolds was on the phone with him when she was strickened.
"I want to be with Carrie," she said.
The two women were very close and, in fact, lived next door to each other. The loss was a shock.
I was interested to read that a Duke University study several years ago suggested that married couples have lower rates of heart disease than singles or those not in long-term relationships.
Perhaps romance novels with happy endings are more than fiction. Perhaps they reflect a bit of heart reality. People can actually die of a broken heart.
What do you think?

I believe people can die of a broken heart. I think that's exactly what happened to Debbie. We were not meant to be alone.
"We were not meant to be alone." I love that statement, Diane!
I had two co-workers that within months of their wives dying, they died. Sadly, it happens.
Debbie died of a broken heart because she loved her daughter so much and they understood each other through thick and thin. There are people who have been married for so long that they are as one. My in-laws were married for 59 years and when mom passed away, dad said he would soon follow, within 9 months he passed away as well. They were too linked to one another and it caused great heartache in dad( my inlaws). It doesn't happen to everyone but it does happen. I think the most one sees it is when one loses a child, a little light in the parent's'eyes seems to fade a bit.
Hi Mary - I can believe it ... just the shock and thus broken heart ... so sad for them both ... with thoughts - Hilary
Your comments brought tears to my eyes.
Alex, perhaps it's not sad.
Birgit, you follow movies so closely, you would understand more than most the relationship Debbie had with her daughter. Your in-laws must have had a lovely marriage.
Thanks, Hilary, for your thoughts on this.
Happy New Year, All!
