What About the Mentalist?

I've been a fan of the Mentalist for a couple of years now. Last week, I stumbled upon the season finale by accident and was caught completely by surprise with what happened.

Patrick Jane has been a pretty off-beat character from the beginning. He tends to say strange things to people but usually what he says turns out to be an insightful device to get at the truth. However, meeting the infamous Red John in the middle of a shopping mall and then shooting him in cold blood was shocking to me. This terrifying killer has been the subject of Jane's search since the first episode. Red John deserved what he got, but is Patrick the kind of person to shoot a man in cold blood, then sit down near the body and finish a cup of tea? I didn't think so.

What will happen to Patrick next season? Will we have a season filled with a long, drawn-out murder trial? I hope not. What have the writers accomplished?

What did you think about the season finale of the Mentalist.

Normally, I can take or leave that show and only watch it once in a while when there's nothing else on. But I did watch the season finale. I love Bradley Whitford and from the time he showed up to the very end of the episode, I was pretty riveted. I'm very interested to know where the writers will take this next season. Job well done, Mentalist writers.

Okay I missed it and now will have to make sure I see it.
You sure raise a lot of questions here.

I finished the season yesterday and was actually shocked about what happened. I was picturing Red John walking out the door and Patrick Jane left alone with his demons.
I think, although abrupt, it was a fitting end: with the questions he made sure that it was indeed Red John and not one of his elaborate schemes. He was working toward it for three seasons and could hardly let him get away so easily.
I say well done to step up for this, he really wasn't going to retire!!
THe tea was maybe a bit overdone, but Patrick knew what was coming. It will be his last cup for a long time...
If there is a next season, it will be partly on his trial, his friends choosing his side, developments with other characters and his help from prison with their cases (like Hannibal Lecter :-)
I say, we will watch and learn...

I had followed it off and on. so this was the season finale? Ha! Don't be surprised if that scene turns out to be a dream sequence.

I didn't dare read your whole post or the comments because we've recorded the last few Mentalist shows but haven't watched them yet. My husband and I love the show and hope it stays around for a long time.

I believed absolutely that Patrick would kill the guy--he's been working up to it and dropping clues that he would for a long time. Even the gun had been in the show before.

I agree that it wouldn't be surprising if it turned out to be a dream sequence but, if it isn't, I also wouldn't be surprised to learn that that guy was NOT Red John, but a sacrifice that Red John sent in to take the fall for him. RJ is supposed to be powerful and well-connected. RJ is quite capable of forcing or twisting somebody to repeat information he's fed them.

And RJ is so obsessed with Patrick, he might very well get him off the charge.

Fascinating show. I love it! :)

Thanks to all of you for your comments. I apologize to those of you who had not yet viewed the show! I thought I allowed enough time before posting.

I think I was taken aback and mildly uncomfortable by his behavior, but didn't feel it was completely out of character. The man almost went out of his mind by the loss of his wife and daughter and was hell-bent on revenge. The question popping up in my mind is, is it really the end of Red John?

I'm not entirely sure how they will deal with it next season, but I'm going to tune in.

On the other hand, I wasn't at all surprised by O'Laughlin as the mole. He always felt like an outsider to me, and I always held out that Grace and Rigsby would get back together. The plot twist feels a bit trite, IMHO.

I was wondering the same thing. RJ has been a constant the whole series. What are they going to do?
