Sunset Taken from the Air

"Sunset from the Air" MM Sikes
En route home from an awesome trip, I took yet another sunset photo. We were flying from Los Angeles to Chicago and were about an hour away from our destination when this picture was taken. Digital photography is truly amazing because the smudgy airplane window was partially covered with frosty ice particles.

Years ago, when I took my first photos from the air, they inspired a fascination with air views. Although the quality using 35mm film was not great, I used many of my pictures as working sketches for a series of large acrylic paintings that I called "Air Views." After that, I did another series--this time of mountains as seen from the air.

Do you like to take photos from the air? Have you sometimes been excited with the results? I would love to hear about your photos.

I try not to look out the window. (I hate to fly!) Nice photo.

It makes me less claustrophobic to look out the window, Alex. Goodness, you're sending your guy flying into outer space!

Monti, the sunset photos are incredible ... they bring to mind words of poetry immediately. I can see your interest in working with this collection ... so many great possibilities. Have never taken many photos from the air, so I'm glad you're sharing yours. Nothing captures the ying and yang of life like sunrise and sunset. Have a lovely day. --Daisy

I'm bad about taking pictures period since I'm always more involved in what's happening around me. I've never taken photos from a plane window. I will have to try it one day because there are some amazing sights to be seen.

Hi Monti .. lovely picture and we can see amazing sites from aeroplane windows .. and your creativity is such fun.

I saw 'our' moon over the sea this week with some friends who are here from SA .. it was bang over the English Channel parallel to the Royal Parade, the road along our sea front .. we took a ride up to the end and I turned round for them to see the pier and its lights as well as the moon - deep cream-almost red .. beautiful!

Cheers Hilary

Daisy, I've always been fascinated with the sights of sites as seen from the air.

Arlee Bird, you might enjoy some air view photos.

Hilary, how I envy your gorgeous view of the moon. We could not see the eclipse earlier this week in the U.S. Perhaps you saw it there.

Thank you all for your comments.

Hi Monti .. no - sadly it was cloudy .. it did clear at about 1.00 am & I had a look - but when I saw the moon the next night I realised it was too low in the sky so probably was there .. but hidden from me by a house and or a tree! It was a stunning view - one I'll remember - albeit .. it wasn't my big, big, big creamy moon across the bay (William the Conqueror's landing place!) ..

Cheers - extra info added for free! Friends have gone back .. and I'm slowly coming up for air .. Hilary

This is a gorgeous photo! I flew from San Francisco home to Ohio a few years ago, and saw an amazing sunset. This photo reminded me of that, thanks for the memory! I love to look out the window while flying as well.
