Do You Depend on Your Computer?

Today has been a dismal Friday. I knew I depended on my computer but didn't realize until this morning quite how much.

My major computer is down. It's the one with all my documents, photos, and addresses. It's my life in cyberspace all on one computer.

Tomorrow, I'm making a talk about writing for the Fredericksburg Writers Group in the morning. I also have a book signing scheduled tomorrow afternoon from 2 to 4 at the Griffin Bookshop on Caroline St. With my crowded weekly schedule, today was the day for me to get my talk ready, make new business cards, and create new flyers and other graphic materials. That didn't happen. I was going to send last-minute reminders and information about the book signing. That didn't happen either.

This evening, I also planned to attend a Homecoming Reception for alumni art students at the College of William and Mary. I'd looked forward to that event for quite some time. That also didn't happen because I lost so much time trying to fix the computer problem. Instead, I stayed home and found materials for Plan B tomorrow.

How much do you depend on your computer? Do you live your life in cyberspace?

Scary how much we do depend on it. We have several computers in our house and I back up everything on an external hard drive once a week. So if something happened to mine, I could go use my wife's computer. Hope you are able to retrieve your data!

OMG, I'm obsessed with my computer. And we have, like, 8 in our house because my husband seems to think we need that many. But even with all those, I would die if my laptop went out. Good luck at surviving!

Hi Monti .. hope all goes well and you can relax at least a little during all this kerfuffle. I have an external harddrive .. and using gmail helps .. but I lead a simple life for now - though obviously here's a lesson to be prepared for possibilities going haywire.

Good luck - cheers Hilary

My purple laptop is attached to my hip. I don't usually leave home without it. You never know when I'll find time to write something or research. I'm an overly prepared person. Or some like to say I have issues. Oh, well.

Good luck! I hope you don't lose any data.

We have only one laptop, and depend on it a lot--it's one of only a couple places where I access the Internet.

Thanks, all, for your comments! Unlike Alex, I do not have everything backed up. My husband is working on the situation, but the computer with my life locked in it is still down. Olen warned me not to store things on my C-Drive, but I did. Things like many irreplaceable photos.

Without having all my files at the ready, I feel lost. Please backup all your files!!!
