"Air View" by Mary Montague Sikes |
I was touched by a comment written last week on Facebook about a precognitive dream a woman had the night before this horrible tragedy. In the dream, she was lying dead on a coast guard cutter in the middle of the ocean, and in the distance other cutters with cranes on them were removing debris from the waters. This woman believed she was going to die the next day, but then she saw the Challenger disaster unfold on TV like she had seen in her dream. She is now much more aware of her dreams and tries to interpret the meaning of each.
Over the years, I have read accounts of dreams people have had prior to traumatic events. That account from the Challenger precognitive dream started me thinking and wondering how often people experience dreams like this. Have you ever had one? Did you have a precognitive dream right before 9/11? I would like to know more about these dreams.

No, I'm afraid I've never had a dream like that.
My great-grandmother was convinced all dreams predicted the future, though it was usually a minor thing. Nearly every day she would say something like, "I went for a walk and saw a bird feather lying on the ground. I dreamed about birds last night, so there's the end of my dream."
That's about as precognitive as any of my dreams are. Now, if my birth daughter is in emotional turmoil, I'll usually wake up disturbed, but that's not dreaming.

The night before the tsunami hit Japan, I dreamt of a huge wave that crarried ships on it's crest. I thought little of it until I woke the next day to find the news of the tsunami and earthquake all over Facebook. I have also had dreams of places I've yet to visit. I usually remember the dreams once I find the actual place in waking life, it feels like dejavu.
Dear Mary
I too dreamt of the Challenger .I awoke from it and told my partner, in great detail how I had witnessed the huge explosion and how I had been standing in a crowd of people looking up at it. I could hear the voices of people saying 'oh my god'. It was so real.He just laughed it off, until later that day when we turned the news on. And it was exactly as it was reported.
I also dreamt of Concords crash. Exactly as it happened, flying whilst on fire then crashing.
I have had many dreams like this and all have come true. I do not and have not been a drug / alcohol abuser. I have never been sectioned under the mental health act. I work hard and have an average 'normal' life with a family.
These dreams have really upset me, because there is truly nothing I can do. Who would have believed me or taken me seriously if say I called Air France and told them that their Concord was going to crash? The other side of it is that each time a vivid 'dream' event occurs, I live in hope that it is not going to happen and that it is just going to be a bad dream after all.
