We were told to never do multiple submissions to any of the houses. I knew people who did and were never harmed by it. Those writers said they didn't have time to wait around to get published.
Some writers didn't care that they had not finished a manuscript when they submitted their proposal. They didn't follow the rules of having it complete. Those writers often won.
Show, don't tell, the rule says. Some well-known authors tell a lot in their books and do just fine. Readers love them. They often hit the top of the best-seller lists.
Maybe the many rules are right for some people. Maybe they are good for special occasions. Maybe, but...

Good post. I've also noticed many breaking every rule and getting away with it. I especially liked your point about going for the gold. Especially since I'm nearer the end of my career than the start.
Rules are meant to be broken especially when someone tells you the only way to write or sell your book is only this way...please! You captured what many must think or even worry about. You explain it well and I agree with what you wrote 100%
And know when to break those rules!
LOL! Trust me, most writers do multiple submissions. As a publisher, I expect it now.

SO TRUE.... I've played by the "rules" and nothing has happened. I intend to write what I like from now on....that is when I start writing again....
